for the launching of our attempt to knit the
WORLD'S LARGEST FISH HAT.
 |
Our hat will be
6" wide
and about 15'-20' long.
Gerry is shown (below) casting
on the 500 stitches on a size 11 needle
using chunky yarn.
We'd like to welcome
everyone
to stop in and knit a spell on the hat.
We hope to have it finished for
Karl Oskar Days parade.
Below are photos of
knitting on the hat.

We call the fish "The
World's Largest Fish". It measures about 6'10" x 20'9".
We use about 150 skeins of Brown Sheep bulky yarn. We applied to Guinness
Book of Records and got a response. They put us in the knit sculpture
category and we lost out to a small pink rabbit.....well, not so
small. You can look it up on the internet under Hase the giant rabbit.
You have to see it to believe it. This thing is 200 feet long, took 5
years to knit, 2,200 pounds of wool yarn and is on display in Italy on
a hillside. It is visible from a satellite!!!! I still think we can
say we have the world's largest knit fish though.
I don't know if you got a chance
to see the fish on Kare 11 News a while back. They actually came out
to see the fish and did a story on it! If you look on the internet
under world's largest knit fish, you come up to the Kare 11 news site
and you can watch the video!!
The fish is or was displayed at
the Minnesota State Fair. We should get some pictures of that to put
on the website soon. Have fish will travel. This has been such a fun
experience! |

and Shoot Night ~
"Share and Shoot
Night" was a time for all to bring the projects they
have done and share with the others and shoot pictures of the
accomplishments.
|

|
Donna
modeling her gold and brown Harry Potter hat and scarf knitted with Plymouth
Encore yarn. She also is wearing her Misti Alpaca scarf, wrist warmers and
matching hat. The shawl she has on is made with silk ribbon. The purse is
one she entered in the fair last year. She combined a felted purse with
Malabrigo yarn and attached a hooked piece she made out of strips of wool
fabric. |
|

|
Geri,
better known as our resident sock expert, is displaying a
variety of beautiful socks she has been making since the beginning
of this year. This is only a sampling. She has knit probably over
a couple hundred pairs over the years. She has begun to create her
own sock patterns and hopes to publish them at some point.
On her
head is a pair of mittens she completed in about 4 1/2 hours with
one of our mitten kits.
|
|

|
Sara
is what I like to call our knitting savant. She has only been
knitting a few short months and is displaying the three items she
has already completed.
Her very first project was the Misti Alpaca
scarf, knitted in the eve's rib pattern. The second project she
ever tackled was the mittens, these were from a kit, and the third
project was a pair of socks on size 1 double pointed
needles!!!!
Way to go Sara.

Sue
just recently learned how to knit. She ran out of crochet patterns
and decided to give knitting a go.
Her first real knitting project
was the fish hat she is wearing on her head. She went out on the
frozen lake last winter and sold some of these adorable hats to
the ice fisher people. I think they have got to bring good fishing
luck when you wear them.
She has on her shoulder the wonderful
wallaby sweater with an adorable puppy she added on the pouch
part. the other items are crocheted little girl dresses and one of
her crochet felted purses.
|
|

|
Sue
again but this time with some of her felted crochet purses. I
think she knits and crochets in her sleep also. |
|

|
Geri
with the sweaters she has knitted. Helping her display them is her
daughter Laura who is learning how to knit in her spare time. The
blue sweater Laura has on is one Geri knit with cotton yarn from
Brown Sheep. It has a really nice feel to it. The sweater
Geri has on is yarn from Ironstone. It combines a couple yarns
together. It is knit with big needles and is basically two pieces,
front and back, that look like "T"s and the collar is
picked up last. The sweater between the two of them is knit with
Malabrigo yarn. Geri can be seen wearing this one alot in the
winter months. It feels so soft and she says it keeps her toasty
warm in the winter. |
|

|
Donna again, this time she has
on a shawl that crosses and attaches in the back. To start with,
she needed to cast on 850 stitches for the ruffle edge! She was
not a real happy camper at this point, but when the stitches got
down to a more managable number, her attitude improved greatly!
Donna always makes us laugh. She is a very special addition to our
knitting group. It really turned out beautiful and the colors in
this Malabrigo yarn are gorgous. In her hand is a market bag she
knitted using cotton yarn. |
|

|
Holly
is showing us her beautiful felted hat and matching mittens. |
|

|
Connie,
who has become our resident sweater lady, is wearing an absolutely
gorgeous charcoal colored sweater and holding another that she
just finished. This is the same pattern and kind of yarn that Geri
used on one of her sweaters. |
|

|
Shown
here is Danny with some of the wooden shawl pins he has made to
sell in the shop. They are made from specialty woods that he hand
cuts, sands and seals. They are beautiful and look great on so
many shawls and sweaters. If you would like to purchase one, just
let us know. They run about $16, depending on the wood. |
|

|
Miss
Elsie's Yarnery has some really great potlucks. Shown here is Deb
with the before of a strawberry shortcake brought in by Sue.
Doesn't it look delicious! |
|

|
Deb
is finishing up that once lovely shortcake. The smile says it

This competition involved
seeing how many stitches each team of two could knit in 10 minutes on
the giant fish had. We allowed any kind of distraction, so it got really
funny seeing what people came up with to try to distract the knitter
from getting a good count. |
|
|
|
|

|

|
|

This event requires three people on a team.
They cast on 5 stitches and then knit
as many rows they can on these
huge knitting needles.

These are the gold, silver and
bronze medal winners for the
knit fish hat category.
